The team
Adam Barnet, BA Arch
Adam was born in South Africa and studied architecture at the University of Cape Town. He came to the UK over 20 years ago and completed his Part 3 at the Polytechnic of Central London (now the University of Westminster). He worked in London then Cambridge on a variety of work including new build, refurbishment, interior fit out and space planning for commercial, financial, legal, residential and retail clients. He moved to Hastings and joined AJK in 2006.
His interests include art, theatre, classical music, current affairs, country walks and swimming in the sea
Mick Catterall
Michael has lived in Hastings for 15 years and has worked for various architectural practices in Sussex and London. He has been working with AJK for nearly 10 years on and off as a technician.
He spends his spare time being a dad and occasionally finds time to play some tennis and watch his beloved football team, Wigan AFC.
Peter Clark MRICS
Peter is a Hastings lad. He studied quantity surveying at the Brixton School of Building and South Bank Polytechnic. He worked in private practice in Hastings, Eastbourne and London before returning to Hastings to work for Hastings Borough Council and AJK.
When he is not quantity surveying he will be found sailing, clay pigeon shooting, walking and gardening.
Fred Courtney Bennett BA Arch, Grad Dip Arch, RIBA, MaPS
Fred has lived in Hastings for twenty years and has worked for AJK for fifteen. He studied architecture at South Bank Polytechnic before moving to the Outer Hebrides, where he worked on housing, education and residential care projects, returning to the South East of England to work for Hastings Borough Council. He joined AJK after five years in self build housing consultancy and his own practice.
Fred is on the Diocese of Chichester Approved list of Architects and is a CDM Co-ordinator. When he’s not working he likes to be sailing and travelling.
Casper Cummins MA (Cantab), Dip Arch
After studying Architecture at Cambridge and East London Universities, in 1996 Casper co-founded his own design business in Shoreditch. Pod Productions produced 3D computer images and Virtual Reality for a variety of architectural, publishing, development, retail and arts-based Clients such as Chetwood Associates, Conde Naste Traveller, Land Securities, Virgin and the Association of Black Photographers. Having moved back to Hastings in 1999 and tired of commuting to this Virtual World, Casper decided it was time to get to grips with Real Buildings and in 2005 he joined AJK. When not at work, he can be found living the Good Life with wife Tracey, their three children, cats and chickens.
Peter Hazleton
Peter was born and bred in Hastings. After studying at Hastings College he followed in his fathers footsteps to work for Hastings Borough Council Architects and AJK before leaving to work for East Sussex County Council. Peter returned to Hastings and AJK in 1998.
Peter’s wife has recently had twins, so he doesn’t have much spare time, but still manages to fit in swimming, DIY and model making.
Jane Hammans
Jane moved from London where she was working for Enfield Borough Council to St. Leonards-on-Sea in 1986 to work for Hastings Borough Council. She became AJK’s Office Administrator in 1989. Jane studied business and finance at Hastings College.
Married with one daughter, Jane does not get much spare time but enjoys reading, catching up with friends and family days out.
Richard Kennard BSc (Hons) MRICS
Born in Sussex, after studying at Brighton College of Technology, Richard moved to London, a single man, and spent 10 years with James Nisbet and Partners before returning to Sussex , with a wife and two children, to become Chief Quantity Surveyor of Hastings Borough Council. 9 years later he was one of the founder directors of AJK.
A keen Rotarian Richard’s interests include historic buildings, gardening, bell ringing and jazz as well as being an active member of his local church.
Mike Melvin BSc
Mike was born in London. He studied at South East London College and then architecture at Polytechnic of North London. He worked in private practice and then the GLC and London Underground for more than 20 Years. He moved to Winchelsea and started work with AJK 9 years ago.
Mike is a Freeman of Winchelsea and an active member of the Corporation to Maintain Ancient Monuments, any other spare time is spent painting and gardening and enjoying his family and grandchildren.
John White Cert Arch RIBA
John and his family moved to East Sussex in 1978 after qualifying at Leicester School of Architecture. As a keen sailor the opportunities of a move to the coast was irresistible and is now well and truly settled in Hastings. His career began with Leicester County Architect’s where John developed a strong interest in Educational design and provision.
In his spare time John enjoys gardening, walking, fishing, DIY and sailing.
